Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz continues to command high praise from veterans of the sport, with legendary coach Rick Macci boldly predicting that the young sensation will capture at least two major titles in 2027. As the ATP tour evolves and a new generation of fierce competitors establishes itself at the top of the rankings, Alcaraz’s unique blend of explosive power, exceptional court coverage, and tactical versatility keeps him ahead of the curve.
Highlighting the trajectory of the champion, Macci emphasized that Alcaraz’s mental fortitude sets a high benchmark for the rest of the tour. “The Spanish Magician, barring injury in 2027, will take another step towards rare air and bag at least two, maybe three, Grand Slams,” Macci wrote on X. “What I saw mentally from him at the US Open was another level of you cannot make this up.
From adversity and fear, you find another gear from ear to ear.” That mental resolve was heavily tested during a memorable US Open campaign, where Ben Shelton halted Alcaraz in one of the longest and most unusual matches of the tournament. The American prevailed 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7) in a marathon thriller that concluded at 3:33 a.m.
While the grueling defeat brought an end to Alcaraz’s remarkable 18-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the quarterfinals immediately after nearly five months out with a wrist injury remained an impressive feat. Reflecting on his comeback tournament, Alcaraz admitted that his initial goals in New York were modest. “At the beginning of the tournament, I didn’t come in with any expectations.
It was simply about coming here and seeing how my body responded, how my wrist responded in particular, and above all, enjoying being back in competition.”
