For decades, Nigeria’s infrastructure conversation has been dominated by roads, bridges, power plants, railways and other physical assets considered essential to economic development. But a different kind of infrastructure is now becoming just as important: data centres, cloud platforms, computing clusters, digital networks and the systems required to process the enormous volumes of information generated by an increasingly connected economy.
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) accelerates this transition, computing power is emerging as a strategic economic resource. Countries that control the infrastructure needed to store data, train AI models and run digital services will increasingly have an advantage in attracting investment, developing technology and creating high-value jobs. It is against this backdrop that the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) is quietly reshaping part of its infrastructure strategy.
Rather than limiting infrastructure investment to traditional physical assets, NSIA is expanding into the digital foundations of the economy, betting that Nigeria’s competitiveness in the decades ahead will depend increasingly on data, compute capacity and innovation. At the centre of this strategy is the KASI Hyperscale Data Centre, an ambitious digital infrastructure project in Lagos that, upon full development, is expected to have approximately 100 megawatts (MW) of combined capacity.
The project is designed not merely to store Nigeria’s growing data, but to provide the computing infrastructure required to power the next phase of the country’s digital economy. Nigeria remains heavily associated with oil and gas, but the country’s economic future is increasingly being shaped by sectors that depend on technology. Financial technology companies process millions of transactions digitally. E-commerce businesses operate through online platforms. Hospitals are adopting digital systems.
Educational institutions are moving services online, while businesses increasingly rely on cloud computing, data analytics and cybersecurity.
