House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., invoked the legacy of former President John Quincy Adams at the Republican National Committee’s Midterm Convention, urging Republicans to remember that “duty is ours, results are God’s” as they face the midterm elections. Johnson was one of several speakers at the two-day Republican convention in Dallas, Texas, to warn about the threats he said Democrats would pose if they win the upcoming midterm elections.
During his remarks Thursday, Johnson characterized his opponents as “radical Marxists who are planning to dramatically grow government, raise your taxes, drive costs through the roof and rob you of your freedom.” He also referred to several Democratic congressional candidates as “communists.” Johnson told the crowd that he wished he could take them all on a tour of the U.S.
Capitol, specifically highlighting his admiration of “our incredible rotunda, with its great dome that is … the most recognized symbol of freedom around the world” as well as “the House floor.” He informed the crowd that “the first thing that you would see if you walked in at the members’ eye level is ‘In God We Trust’ right above the Speaker’s head.” Johnson noted how a booklet given to people as they go on a tour of the U.S.
Capitol called “The Visitor’s Guide to the People’s House” explains how the phrase was put there by the U.S.
