Everton and long-standing England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has embraced the growing rivalry with James Trafford, insisting that fresh competition can only bring out the best in him. Pickford, who has held the undisputed No. 1 spot for nearly a decade, recently watched from the sidelines as manager Thomas Tuchel handed starts to the in-form Leeds United goalkeeper Trafford in UEFA Nations League fixtures against Spain and the Czech Republic.
Speaking about the battle for the gloves under Tuchel, the 32-year-old made it clear that he views the challenge positively rather than shying away from it. “I feel for me personally it’s always good to have good competition,” Pickford said. “I’ve always said in interviews I’ve always wanted that competition.” While Trafford has seized his opportunity following a high-profile move to Leeds, Pickford remains focused on his own standards and longevity.
“I’m 32 now, you see keepers playing still at 40, still playing at the highest level. It’s about me focusing on myself; I set myself my own goals.” With Tuchel eager to evaluate all options ahead of major international milestones, the competition between Pickford’s wealth of experience and Trafford’s rising momentum has injected a compelling narrative into the Three Lions squad.
